Reducing Waste

The more waste we produce, the sooner our capacity for disposing of that waste will be exceeded. By further reducing waste, we can extend the life of our landfills and save the high cost of shipping our garbage off coast. Recycling our waste products and composting are two ways to help solve the problem, but we need other ideas and to think “outside the box.”  See Waste Reduction Initiative Initiatives Program – SCRD.  How about having a “fix it” event in Pender Harbour?

What does the IGA do with its food waste? Is it taking it to the organics bin at the Transfer Station, or is it all still going into the garbage? I wonder if they have considered locating a digester on site; they could even allow drop-offs from local residents; I’m sure there are many people who live around Madeira Park who don’t have adequate transportation to get their waste to the transfer station but could walk it to IGA.

here’s some more info on digester systems (there are Canadian waste management vendors who sell these as well) – https://retailwire.com/discussion/can-grocers-digest-their-way-to-zero-waste/
